Django: The Life and Music of a Gypsy Legend
List Price: |
DescriptionDjango Reinhardt was arguably the greatest guitarist who ever lived, an important influence on Les Paul, Charlie Christian, B.B. King, Jerry Garcia, Chet Atkins, and many others. Yet there is no major biography of Reinhardt. Now, in Django, Michael Dregni offers a definitive portrait of this great guitarist. Handsome, charismatic, childlike, and unpredictable, Reinhardt was a character out of a picaresque novel. Born in a gypsy caravan at a crossroads in Belgium, he was almost killed in a freak fire that burned half of his body and left his left hand twisted into a claw. But with this maimed left hand flying over the frets and his right hand plucking at dizzying speed, Django became Europe's most famous jazz musician, commanding exorbitant fees--and spending the money as fast as he made it. Dregni not only chronicles this remarkably colorful life--including a fascinating account of gypsy culture--but he also sheds much light on Django's musicianship. He examines his long musical partnership with violinist Stphane Grappelli--the one suave and smooth, the other sharper and more dissonant--and he traces the evolution of their novel string jazz ensemble, Quintette du Hot Club de France. Indeed, the author spotlights Django's amazing musical diversity, describing his swing-styled Nouveau Quintette, his big band Django's Music, and his later bebop ensemble, as well as his many compositions, including symphonic pieces influenced by Ravel and Debussy and his unfinished organ mass inspired by Bach. And along the way, the author offers vivid snapshots of the jazz scene in Paris--colorful portraits of Josephine Baker, Bricktop, Louis Armstrong, Coleman Hawkins, and countless others--and of Django's vagabond wanderings around France, Europe, and the United States, where he toured with Duke Ellington. Capturing the extraordinary life and times of one of the great musicians of the twentieth century, Django is a must-read portrait of a true original. |

Gypsy in My Soul
List Price: |
DescriptionWith Gypsy in My Soul, Connie Evingson goes from cool Beatles to hot jazz. As a follow-up to her Let It Be Jazz, Evingson pays tribute to one of the most distinctive and wonderful sounds in jazz history, the French hot clubs of guitarist Django Reinhardt in the 1930s and '40s. Assisting her are three different bands, Parisota Hot Club and Clearwater Hot Club from her Minnesota home and Pearl Django from Seattle. All have the guitar-led sound just like Django Reinhardt, while Clearwater and Pearl Django add the violin that also helped make the Django sound distinctive (in his case, most famously by Stephane Grappelli). (Parisota substitutes a clarinet, which was a lesser-known aspect of the Django sound.) The groups' sound is also supplemented by accordion (Dan Chouinard and Patrick Harrison), vibes (Susan Pascal), and other instruments. Gypsy in My Soul isn't a note-by-note re-creation: Django didn't use vocals (Evingson provides lyrics to his "Anouman" music for "Django's Premonition" and she sings Susannah McCorkle's lyrics to his "Nuages"), and though he did perform American standards, those wouldn't have included Sting's "Until" or the Nat "King" Cole hit "Nature Boy." But it's a fun listen on its own terms, and might open up a new audience for Django. --David Horiuchi All products are BRAND NEW and factory sealed. Fast shipping and 100% Satisfaction Guaranteed. |

Waltz for Koop
List Price: |
DescriptionKoop combines a wealth of summery melodies and floating vocals with the acid jazz of Gilles Peterson and the laid-back trip-hop aesthetic of Jazzanova and Peter Kruder. The result is a sweet, effortless sound on Waltz For Koop. Starting off with a Brazilian feel, Koop enlists Astrud Gilberto-like chanteuses Cecilia Stalin and Yukimi Nagano to augment the mood, while later, electronic trickster-legend Earl Zinger shows up for a decadent "Modal Mile." The record takes an otherworldly turn with the presence of Chicago folk-jazz artist Terry Callier, as his wistful, spiritual pipes give "In a Heartbeat" a depth that eludes most DJs, who go for electronic lounge and end up with elevator music. Good-natured and accessible without being trendy, Waltz puts a lot of other "chill" collections to shame. --Matthew Cooke All products are BRAND NEW and factory sealed.
