Music for Montserrat
List Price: |
DescriptionOn the evening of September 15, 1997, legendary British music producer George Martin (who had risen to prominence with the Beatles) held a benefit concert at London's Royal Albert Hall for the small Caribbean island of Montserrat, which had recently been devastated by a volcanic eruption. All of the invited superstars had recorded some of their biggest hits at Montserrat's Air Studios, which Martin had founded in 1970, and this shared history gives Music for Montserrat an added sense of enjoyment among friends. Despite a few vocal dropouts and forgivable mixing problems, this outstanding concert has been captured with impressive fidelity, and while each artist performs songs appropriate to the occasion, they share the stage (along with a house band, choir, and orchestra conducted by Martin) in brilliant combinations that bring out the best in everyone involved. The show hits full stride with Mark Knopfler's exquisite "Brothers in Arms," which segues nicely into "Money for Nothing" with guest vocals by Sting, who then performs two hits from his Police years. And while Elton John and Eric Clapton form the centerpiece of the concert (especially Clapton and Knopfler's acoustic "Layla"), Paul McCartney anchors the show with a spectacular four-song conclusion. Phil Collins's expert drumming is matched throughout by legendary percussionist Ray Kooper, and McCartney's fully orchestrated "Golden Slumbers" is a genuine show-stopper, followed by a "Hey Jude" sing-along with everyone on stage. They all follow McCartney's lead for a rockin' rendition of "Kansas City" (which the Beatles had performed as early as 1960), by which time Music for Montserrat had given its royal audience a show they would never forget. --Jeff Shannon MUSIC FOR MONTSERRAT - DVD Movie |

Live 2003 (CD & DVD)
List Price: |
DescriptionRiding high on the phenomenal success of A Rush of Blood to the Head, Coldplay is in peak form on Coldplay Live 2003. This CD/DVD two-pack was filmed (on Super-16mm film) and recorded in Sydney's Horden Pavilion on July 21 and 22, 2003, during an exhaustive year-long world tour, and the medium-sized arena provides a fitting stage for the London-based rock quartet, not so grand as to overwhelm the music, but large enough to indicate their large and loyal following, which includes enthusiastic fans of either gender. Especially when played in DTS 5.1 surround, this 90-minute concert is richer, thicker, and (of course) louder than Coldplay's studio recordings, lending a wall-of-sound expansiveness to the band's signature sound, which draws from such diverse influences as Genesis, Pink Floyd, The Verve, U2, and their own unique sonic landscape. "Politik" gets the gig off to a rousing start, and other impressive! highlights include "Daylight," "Yellow," the as-yet-unreleased new song "Moses," and the popular hits "In My Place," "Clocks," and "The Scientist." And while the concert visuals are slick and professional (perhaps placing a bit too much emphasis on singer/frontman Chris Martin), this DVD and CD--the latter containing a truncated 70-minute version of the same performance--are best appreciated for their pristine audio quality. Culled from 400 hours of home video, the 40-minute "concert diary" represents a wasted opportunity, enjoyable for hardcore fans but offering no insight into the band or its individual members. Much better, then, to play the concert at healthy high volume, and appreciate Coldplay in the prime of their young career. --Jeff Shannon LIVE 2003 - DVD Movie |

Avril Lavigne - My World (DVD & CD)
Sale Price: $14.85 |
DescriptionAn arena-ful of fans loved every second of this 68-minute concert (recorded in May 2003 in Buffalo, New York) by then-18-year-old pop sensation Avril Lavigne. And while the singer's charms may elude anyone older than, say, 25, that won't stop the sk8er boyz 'n' gurls who bought her Let Go CD by the millions from digging this, her first DVD, as well. Fact is, Lavigne's rather tuneless, sometimes off-key singing isn't her strong suit. And her songwriting... well, Lennon and McCartney, or even the Go-Go's, are in no danger. But she isn't without talent, and she's got attitude to spare (even if that 'tude has a certain MTV-style lack of conviction or insight). Combine that with the loud, crunching guitars, the anthemic, driving choruses of Lavigne's songs, and tons of bonus features (including a six-song, audio-only CD), and you've got more than enough to keep the kids satisfied. After all, it's a rock show, dude. --Sam Graham Avril Like She's Never Been Seen Before! Avril is up-front outrageous and totally in control. And now her first dvd gives you a front-row seat at her Buffalo NY concert and a behind- the-scenes glimpse into her amazing life. Go deeper into Avril's world and see and hear for yourself why Avril is real rockin' and anything but ordinary.Format: DVD AUDIO Genre: MUSIC DVD/CONCERTS UPC: 024543097785 Manufacturer No: 2009778 |
