I was invited to record a historic 4 day Hip-Hop Summer Workshop conducted at Metro High School, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, inspired by Graffiti Verite'. Bob manages to capture the excitement of this innovative workshop and what emerges is a portrait of the educational value and liberating therapeutic power contained within the unique elements of the contemporary Hip-hop movement. Turntablism (DJing ), Break-dancing, MC'ing (Rappin') and Graffiti Art are the elements used in what Bob sees as a multi-faceted communications modality and dynamic educational learning system. "I knew there was a great misconception about what Hip-Hop was really all about,partially due to the massive negative propaganda generated by the media. I wanted totake a closer look at the facts. By using the Roland SDE 3000 Digital Delay system, Nakai is able to play duets with his own echo, in an effort to emulate the echoes of the past that haunt these ruins. On this recording, Nakai's flute sounds even more plaintive than usual, as if the spirits of these forgotten ancestors had entered into the studio to fill his playing with the whispered reverberations of their ancient ways.
